Michael W. Lodge is an international lawyer and consultant, specialising in the international law of the sea and ocean policy. He is a barrister of Gray’s Inn, London.
During his career, Mr. Lodge played a pivotal role in the establishment of the institutions created by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He has had a distinguished 35-year career as an international civil servant and most recently served as the Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority from 2017-2024.
Mr. Lodge has published and lectured extensively on the international law of the sea, with over 35 published books and articles on the law of the sea, oceans policy, and related issues. He has held appointments as a Visiting Fellow of Somerville College, Oxford, an Associate Fellow of Chatham House, London, a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Oceans and as an Independent Adjudicator for the Marine Stewardship Council. He received his LLB from the University of East Anglia and has an MSc in marine policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science.
